A Respected Leader

Served as the 10th president of Augsburg University (2006–2025), where he strengthened the institution’s role as an engaged urban university and led transformational strategic planning and fundraising efforts, including multiple successful comprehensive campaigns and the university’s transition from college to university status.

A respected leader within Lutheran higher education and national higher education associations, Paul has served on numerous boards and chaired collaborative initiatives focused on civic engagement, urban institutions, and ethical leadership.

Paul holds degrees from Luther College and the University of Chicago, where he earned his doctorate in social ethics. He is the co-author of Radical Roots (2023) and co-editor of Through Truth to Freedom (2024), and has written extensively on ethics, philanthropy, and nonprofit leadership.

Since 2016, Paul has shared his reflections through this blog, Notes for the Reflective Practitioner, offering thoughtful insights for leaders committed to purpose-driven work.
